MANILA, Philippines — Two members of the House of Representatives urged Filipinos to refrain from voting for pro-China candidates in the 2025 midterm elections, amid Beijing’s aggressive actions in the West Philippine Sea (WPS).

Deputy Majority Leader and La Union 1st District Rep. Paolo Ortega V and Assistant Majority Leader and Zambales 1st District Rep Jefferson Khonghun separately made the appeal on Monday, after reports showed that the Chinese Coast Guard used a sonic device — a long-range acoustic device capable of high decibel sounds that can damage hearing — to harass the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG).

China Coast Guard (CCG) vessel number 3103 appeared to use the device to deter the PCG’s BRP Cabra from getting closer to the Chinese ship, PCG spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea Commodore Jay Tarriela said on Saturday.

“This is no longer just about the West Philippine Sea — it’s about our future as a nation.  Supporting candidates who are soft on China is the same as endorsing the harassment of our Coast Guard and the exploitation of our natural resources,” Ortega said.

“This is about oil, gas, and fish that belong to Filipinos. Electing leaders who sell out our patrimony for political gain is a betrayal of our nation,” he added.

Khonghun, meanwhile, pointed out that recent surveys have indicated that Filipinos would not support candidates backing China, and that a lot of people view the Asian superpower as the greatest threat to the country.

“Malinaw ang mensahe ng ating mga kababayan. Hindi nila tatanggapin ang mga kandidato na pumapanig sa China. Ang eleksyon ngayong Mayo ay pagkakataon nating ipakita na hindi natin ibebenta ang ating soberanya,” Khonghun said.

(The message from the people is clear: they do not accept candidates who side with China.  The elections this May is a chance for us to show that we would not put our sovereignty for sale.)

“Ang darating na eleksyon ay mahalaga hindi lamang para magluklok tayo ng ating mga lokal at pambansang lider, kundi isyu na rin ito ng national security. We must choose leaders who will defend our territorial rights, not those who will bow down to China’s influence,” he added.

In a disclosure on Thursday, the Zobel family-led company said it had received the notice of approval on Oct. 9.

Guevara showed confidence at a Senate budget hearing on Wednesday about meeting the DOE’s target to open more renewables capacity to the private sector.

(The upcoming elections are so important not only because we will elect local and national leaders, but also because of national security.)

A Pulse Asia survey commissioned by think tank Stratbase Group, which was released last October 2024, showed that seven out of 10 Filipinos “will not support” candidates in the 2025 midterm elections who take positions favorable to China.
